Daniel Fernandes, graphic artist and ceramicist

Finding God in all things through art is something that resonates with me. Ceramics and digital art have little in common, yet I can find beauty in both art forms. One minute of the day I am outside, hands-deep in clay, building a sculpture; and the next, I am indoors, creating a website on my computer. Both are very different, but they allow me to see God's beauty and complexity in the world around me.

Patrice Metcalf, music director

The text of a hymn isn't just words set to varying pitches and rhythms—they are prayers from our hearts. When I sing at Mass, I sing the meaning that I interpret through the text to the Lord. It is imperative that a Music Director internalize these sung prayers when they lead their congregation because they serve as a bridge for the people, promoting communication between believers and God. He is my help in showing light, life, and peace through music.

Dave Goulet, writer and screenwriter

In my creative process, I'm usually mentally wandering off into realms filled with monsters, warriors and rocket ships when I'll discover some theological insight that I might never have otherwise considered. When you create a story, you are building a context for not only a narrative but Truth to be revealed within that context. I wonder if God doesn't experience something similar with His creations. It's kind of exciting to think we may be a source of revelation to Him, just as He is for us.

Tony McCaffrey, oral storyteller

When I create, I feel God’s pleasure. This is my version of a line from the movie Chariots of Fire when the Olympic runner, Eric Liddell, tells his sister, “When I run, I feel His pleasure.”

“None can sense more deeply than you artists…” So begins Saint John Paul II’s Letter to Artists as he encourages us to co-create with God and bring to form some “sense of the mystery of creation.” Wonder and awe accompany many of my attempts at co-creation with God. They also accompany my experience of Creation, most especially the cosmos, as brought to our eyes by the Hubble Space Telescope and now the James Webb Space Telescope. Creating, in general, is my surest path to feeling God’s presence.
